$100M Being Pumped Into MSC’s Ocean Cay Expansion

BIMINI, BAHAMAS – It’s a $100 million Heads of Agreement for the expansion of the Mediterranean Shipping Company’s Development on Ocean Cay.

Prime Minister Philip Davis, who was on hand for the signing, says the development has evolved to encompass a marine conservation center and further infrastructure improvements.

Davis says over $400 million has already been invested in the project.

Something that stuck out for the prime minister is MSC’s commitment to using renewable energy which aligns with the Davis Administration’s energy transition agenda.

Senior Vice President of Port Development Gianluca Supriani tells us construction on the project will begin in January 2024 which he admits will be challenging.

He says during the more challenging points the cay will be closed for six weeks between April and May 2024. Construction is expected to wrap up in November of that year.

The project is expected to employ an additional 200 Bahamians and provide entrepreneurial opportunities as well.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism Chester Cooper says the project is significant for Bimini and the overall tourism product especially for Bahamian employees.
