NFA Chief: Firearm Ownership May Deter Crime
NASSAU, BAHAMAS – In the midst of a surge in homicides over the past few days, the National Firearms Association says it supports civilian gun ownership for family protection but not without proper training.
NASSAU, BAHAMAS – In the midst of a surge in homicides over the past few days, the National Firearms Association says it supports civilian gun ownership for family protection but not without proper training.
In the first five days of 2024, The Bahamas has already recorded five murders coming off the heels of a bloody year that saw the murder count exceed 100 in 2023.
NFA Director Virgil Sturrup argues that civilian gun ownership may serve as a significant deterrent and safeguard.
Citing global statistics that demonstrate a correlation between increased civilian gun ownership and a subsequent decline in crime.
Sturrup says there are just under 40,000 licensed firearms holders in The Bahamas however he says the association believes there must be more training on the use of firearms.
And more than that Sturrup says firearms should only be granted to individuals who have undergone proper training highlighting the fact that more than 80 percent of licensed gun holders have never utilized their firearms.
