Charlton Speaks On New 60mH World Record

GLASGOW, SCOTLAND – Devynne Charlton has made the 60-meter hurdles a marquee event for Bahamians everywhere and continues to rewrite the record books.

Charlton shattered her own 60-meter hurdles world record to win gold at the World Athletics Indoor championships on Sunday in Glasgow, Scotland.

Her time of 7.65 seconds lowered her previous record of 7.67 seconds set last month at the Millrose Games in New York.

At the 2022 World Indoors, Charlton won silver in a then-national record 7.81 seconds. She spoke on the importance of serving as an inspiration to future generations.

Ken Mullings finished fourth in the heptathlon with a score of 6242.

He headed into the final event, the 1000m, in third place – 13 points behind Sander Skotheim of Norway and 47 points ahead of Erm Johannes of Estonia.

Skotheim and Johannes both finished ahead of Mullings in the 1000 meters to claim the silver and bronze medals respectively.

Charisma Taylor’s busy Sunday included a sixth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles final in 7.92 seconds and a 6th place finish in the triple jump with a season’s best 14.11 meters. 

As for the rest of Team Bahamas, Anthonique Strachan finished 23rd overall in the 60 meters in 7.36 seconds, Donald Thomas finished 9th in the high jump with a season-best mark of 2.15 meters, and Laquan Nairn finished 15th in the long jump with a leap of 7.59m.

Track and Field

The C.R. Walker Knights continued their GSSSA track and field dominance.

The Knights claimed their 8th straight meet title with a total of 567 points.

C.R. Walker once again got the better of their rival C.V. Bethel Stingrays who finished second with 536 points.

Baseball

Sebastian Walcott continues to make Bahamian baseball history.

The 17-year-old Texas Rangers prospect became the youngest Bahamian player to ever appear in an MLB spring training game

In the sixth inning of the Rangers’ 14-3 win over the Chicago White Sox, Walcott replaced Matt Duffy in shortstop.

Rangers’ manager bruce bochy told the dallas morning news that he was impressed with walcott’s field presence among the big leaguers.

In his first pro season, Walcott hit .246 with seven home runs, 24 RBI, and 12 stolen bases. He advanced to high-a Hickory and is ranked number 71 on MLB pipeline’s top 100 prospects list.

Boxing

Rashield Williams is your new NBA welterweight champion.

In his first fight of the year, Williams won the National Boxing Association Welterweight Title with a second-round TKO over Andres Viera Saturday night in Tampa, Florida.

The 34-year-old Williams, out of the Contenders Boxing Gym in Fort Lauderdale, improved to 11-2 in his fifth year as a pro.

Williams went undefeated in the four fights in 2023 and has carried that momentum over into 2024.
