NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The dire situation in Haiti is expected to again take center stage at this year’s CARICOM meeting in July.

Former Prime Minister Perry Christie, who serves as one of three former prime ministers on the Eminent Persons Group, says they’re waiting on a multinational force to go into Haiti.

The U.N. approved the multinational force late last year.

Haiti has faced political, social, and economic turmoil for years since the assassination of former President Jovenel Moise in July 2021.

At the center of the controversy more recently were calls for former President Ariel Henry’s resignation.

Gangs took control of the streets and Haiti declared a state of emergency.

Christie believes Haitian leaders have been comfortably leaning on CARICOM for support.

The Bahamas committed to sending 150 troops to Haiti along with other Caribbean countries.

Kenya has agreed to lead the initiative with 1000 troops but a Kenyan court blocked the deployment, putting the security force at risk.
