NEPAL – Tragedy struck in Nepal Tuesday as a Saurya Airlines flight crashed and caught fire shortly after takeoff from Kathmandu, killing 18 people.

The pilot, the only survivor, is said to be in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The flight, carrying 17 company employees and two crew members, was heading to Pokhara for a routine maintenance check.

Eyewitnesses described hearing a loud noise and seeing the plane engulfed in flames.

Nepal’s aviation industry has faced criticism for its poor safety record.

Authorities are investigating the cause, with initial reports suggesting the plane veered in the wrong direction.
