PUERTO RICO – Tropical Storm Ernesto battered the Northeastern Caribbean on Tuesday, targeting Puerto Rico. Schools closed, shelters opened, and endangered parrots were moved to safety.

Ernesto is expected to strengthen into a hurricane by Wednesday, prompting a hurricane watch for several countries including Puerto Rico, the U.S. and British Virgin Islands.

Puerto Rico’s Governor activated the National Guard and urged residents to seek shelter. This as coastal communities braced for waves up to 20 feet.

The storm, with winds up to 50 mph, is forecasted to pass near the U.S. Virgin islands Tuesday evening, bringing heavy rains, flooding, and potential landslides.
