41 Unions Threaten To Pull Labor

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – After stern instructions from president Obie Ferguson, the 41 affiliates of the Trade Union Congress will take action by end of day Friday over outstanding issues.

TUC President Obie Ferguson seeking to make it clear the time for complaining is over.

We put the matter to Labour and Public Service minister Pia Glover-Rolle who said the TUC is well within its right to make such a move.

But what was the straw that broke the camel’s back?

Well, the directives came after the Bahamas Customs, Immigration, and Allied Workers Union expressed their disapproval of what they’re calling illegal appointments of people outside of the public service to be immigration officers.

Union President Deron Brooks says the appointments are a breach of the constitution and the union’s industrial agreement.

And Brooks says the union isn’t buying the justification for the contractual appointments, adding that several people were rehired this week alone.

Additionally, the union attained a court order to address the issue, but it seems there has been no resolve.

Making matters worse is the issue is badly impacting morale.
