“I did it because I wanted to help people. I wanted to help women who are going through the same struggle that my mom went through.”

Janica McCardy was diagnosed with HER2-positive breast cancer in October 2022, which required frequent travel between Eleuthera and New Providence for treatment.

Though her insurance covered most expenses, McCardy explained to her son that not all women have that advantage. Inspired, Janoah decided to raise money to donate to the Cancer Society of Eleuthera.

“To see him make that donation to the Cancer Society—it washed me away in tears. It made me feel proud to know that a 10-year-old boy could see the need and take that on.”

Janoah earned the money through good grades, chores, and family support.

“My aunt Nicole promised me $5 for each A I got on my report card. I earned $115, and my mom also gave me $5 every Friday when I did my chores.”

Janoah’s father, Clement Penn Sr., doubled the money, and his aunt gave him extra rewards for high test scores. Janoah hopes his actions inspire others.

“I spoke to my friends about it, and I hope they can be inspired to do the same thing. When I donated, I felt like a hero.”
