GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – As we’ve previously mentioned, the City Management Department is vital to the operations of the Grand Bahama Port Authority; one of its key responsibilities is overseeing the lighting throughout the city of Freeport.

Lighting has been an ongoing concern for many residents. To address this, Deputy Director and City Manager Troy McIntosh says the team is closely monitoring the effectiveness of their pilot project.

He says they’re observing how long the lights last and how well they perform.

“We’re not perfect, because we want to be able to institute that solution elsewhere in the city,” he said.

“So for example, you drive in some subdivisions or some streets within communities, and they have called us out and there’s no light there. Well, the solar will be perfect and ideal for it. And so we’re looking to see how well they perform. Now, that is where they come. This is ideal for us to see how well they’re going to perform. We the question has been answered in terms of illumination that works, we want to look at durability.”

One of the major challenges they face is the large canopy trees along the main roads near the street lights.

Looking ahead to 2025, McIntosh shares the plan is to expand the use of solar-powered lights throughout the city, which he believes will help alleviate some of these issues.

“We want to look at where people are, make sure that we can do that successfully, and then look at what you call urban areas, where there’s less development, and then continue to Build it all as possible,” McIntosh said.
