NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The nation marked a major milestone in July when we all celebrated the 50th year of independence.

It was on this site in 1973 the Union Jack was lowered and the official flag of an independent Bahamas was raised as thousands of Bahamians and foreign dignitaries including the now King Charles witnessed a new era being ushered in.

Fast forward 50 years later our pride continues to be displayed stronger than ever.

In anticipation of the momentous celebration, on January 19 of this year the Independence Secretariat unveiled the logo and theme for the country’s Golden Jubilee. The logo, although met with some criticism, the public at large embraced the graphic as it was designed by local Bahamians.

As we drew closer to July 10 many events were hosted across the country to keep the momentum going.

Now to the grand event, showtime on Clifford Park for the Ecumenical Service, Military Tattoo and Cultural Show.

Scores of Bahamians of all ages flooded Clifford Park to be entertained by the country’s armed services and Bahamian artist.

As the night continued the sky was lit up by an eye catching drone show. To cap the evening as every year there is the great reenactment of the Bahamian flag being hoisted on the park whilst the sound of our nation’s national anthem rattles Clifford Park.

With a salute on the last note of the anthem fireworks take center stage around the island signifying the end of 50 years and the beginning of year 51.

Crowds then moved from the park to Bay Street to celebrate in true cultural fashion with the ultimate celebratory expression Junkanoo.

Congratulations to the Secretariat on organizing a stellar calendar of events.
