NASSAU, THE BAHAMAS – It’s July 4th, American Independence Day.

This year, thousands of Americans are choosing to celebrate away from home.

Our Denielle Miller spoke with several visitors to find out what brought them here and how they’re spending the holiday.

Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is an American holiday that commemorates the moment in 1776 when the 13 American colonies formally broke political ties with Great Britain and established the independent United States of America.

The declaration of independence was adopted in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, marking a defining moment in U.S. history.

Today, Americans celebrate the holiday through festivities across the country, but this year, thousands chose to trade city skylines and open highways for sun, sand, and sea, vacationing in the Bahamas.

Some arrived by cruise ship, including first-time visitor and newlywed Allysia from Texas.

You know it was funny coming to Nassau when I saw fifty three years of their Independence I was like wow you think American is such a young country but one to be here and able to celebrate with Nassau it was pretty neat with the Bahamians.”

Then there was stay over visitors Sophia and Sarah from Atlanta, Georgia.

“We’re going to be spending the July fourth celebrating my mom’s birthday and we’re going to go and probably watch some fireworks eat some dessert and probably watch some movies. Maybe Love Island, I don’t know if that’s odd.” – Sophia

“Well Happy Birthday mom. Thank you two hundred and fifty years right. I look good. Is this your first time in the Bahamas? No, not for me. My first time. “– Sarah

Like Sarah, Clyde Washington from New Jersey is a return visitor to the island.

He says Fourth of July trips to the Bahamas have become a family tradition over the past 8 years, with one of the main goals being to experience and enjoy local culture.

“Junkanoo I love it. My granddaughter loves it and I got to bring her tonight – she waiting “
