NASSAU, THE BAHAMAS – The Ministry of Youth and Sports, hosting a number of camps this year, but there’s one that stands out from the others. Our Joshua Williams tells us why it’s not only a good camp for students, but a good employment opportunity for older youth.

School is out and for many children and summer means more free time.

While the break offers a chance to relax, experts say it’s also important to keep young people engaged in positive and productive activities.

That’s where the Ministry of Youth and Sports camp “I Matter” comes in.

The camp gives children the opportunity to make new friends, participate in fun activities, build confidence and develop important life skills.

Youth Officer Samantha Rahming explains.

Camp I Matter will be held at Garvin Tynes Primary School, but the program isn’t just benefiting campers.

Dozens of young people have also been hired to work at the camp this summer, gaining valuable job experience while serving as mentors.

Youth Officer Shamron Munroe says the initiative provides meaningful employment throughout the summer.

Before the camp begins, the department is also hosting orientation and training sessions to prepare its young employees for their roles.

I spoke with three of them about what they’re looking forward to this summer.

“I’m looking forward to meeting new persons that I am working with and to just socialize and to get to know more people this year and to just have a wonderful time wonderful experience and getting to know everybody.” – Jasmine Bain

“The children are so kind we love like let them have something to do for the summer because I remember I also went to camp when I was younger and I just was gonna stay home if I didn’t go so I’m just so excited to be able to like give back to something that once give to me.” – Ashley Forbes
