Decision to Layoff Freeport Container Workers Reversed

GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – One day after there was a massive layoff exercise at the Freeport Container Port, it appears the decision has been reversed after the prime minister stepped in.

It came hours after Progressive Liberal Party Chairman Fred Mitchell called an impromptu press conference on Grand Bahama.

Mitchell insists all private and public entities on Grand Bahama need to pull together for the success of the island.

The chairman revealing that the layoffs at the Freeport container company this week included 20 long-term employees and questions whether or not the Freeport Container Port followed the law.

But the decision by officials at the Freeport Container Port did not last long.

The Grand Bahama Ministry releasing a statement this afternoon that says, following the swift intervention of the prime minister, the decision to lay of those twenty employees at the Freeport Container Port has been reversed.

But earlier on Thursday, Mitchell called the ordeal unfortunate as residents on that northern island are still trying to rebuild their lives following hurricane Dorian

He also says government only found out about the layoffs on Wednesday, January 4.

Mitchell confirming that the prime minister reached out to Freeport Container Port executives on Thursday morning.

The chairman says he is aware that there are a number of complaints about the Freeport Container Port’s management team and how Bahamians are treated.
