NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A doctor has been sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment for the rape of a woman that took place 13 years ago.

With time off for good behavior, 52-year-old Dr Gerald Forbes, will be released from prison in eight years.

The sentence takes effect from September 16, 2002, the date of his conviction.
The jury found that Forbes raped the then-20-year-old woman in the bathroom of an office on March 9, 2010.

The victim, now 32, testified that she worked in the same building as Forbes’ clinic, Carmichael Medical. She said that Forbes asked her to answer his phone when he was away.
According to her, Forbes came upstairs with the cordless phone and when she opened the door, he manhandled her and raped her in the bathroom.

For his part, Forbes never denied that sex took place—but he claimed it was consensual.

According to Forbes, the woman enjoyed the sexual liaison more than he did.

In sentencing Senior Justice Bernard Turner said, “Your professional career, Mr Forbes, has been thrown away by yourself. You are the author of your own fate.”
