HONG KONG – At least 128 people are dead after a massive fire tore through a cluster of high-rise apartment buildings in Hong Kong, the city’s deadliest blaze in more than 70 years.

Investigators say flammable construction materials on the outside of the buildings helped the fire spread, with dozens still missing and nearly 80 others injured.

Eleven people have been arrested so far, including engineering directors and scaffolding contractors, as police probe possible corruption and gross negligence linked to renovation works.

More than 2000 firefighters worked to contain the inferno, which reached temperatures of 500 degrees celsius.

The Hong Kong government has opened shelters for displaced residents, as grieving families gather to identify loved ones.
