NASSAU, THE BAHAMAS – He was once told he would never succeed in the classroom but today, Bishop Simeon Hall is preparing to be honoured for a ministry that has spanned more than four decades this weekend – a journey that took him from a high school dropout to one of The Bahamas’ most respected religious leaders.

Our Delvardo Emmanuel reports.

Next Tuesday’s founder’s day celebration will be a special one for New Covenant Baptist Church.

As the congregation honours its founder, Bishop Simeon Hal, along with several of the members who helped establish the ministry more than four decades ago.

For Hall, the upcoming tribute isn’t just about him, he says it’s a reflection of God’s hand on a life many once counted out.

“ I’m very proud of what God has enabled me to do. I have preached the Gospel on every continent in the world. That humbles me.” – Bishop Simeon Hall

Hall’s story began far from the pulpit.

He left school at just 15 years old after a teacher told him he wasn’t smart enough to learn.

But encouraged by his mother, he returned to night school, pursued higher education and eventually took his message of faith across the globe.

He says the foundation of his ministry has always been to make the gospel relevant to the everyday struggles people face.

“ I think the ethos, the kernel of my preaching has been to marry, uh, social problems with theological problems That your theology should shape your sociology. Who God is should be what he means to you, you living through Joke Lane Alley or you living in Beantown. Those, that’s the kind of, uh, the, uh, amalgamation I brought together in the preaching of the gospel.” – Bishop Simeon Hall

Now 79 years old, Hall has stepped away from leading the church day to day, passing the role of senior pastor to a younger generation.

Despite receiving dialysis three times a week, he continues to teach, mentor and share the lessons of his life.

He says staying connected to young people has helped keep both his message and his ministry relevant.

“ One of the ways I have tried to remain relevant is by hanging around young men and women like you. Because you update me, you demand of me. I’m 79 years of age, and I try to preach sermons that are relevant. Why did Stagger-Stagger Lee shoot Billy? How to dance in a graveyard situation Uh, I try to take the Bible and make it applicable to the nowness in our everyday life.” – Bishop Simeon Hall
