GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – Illegal dumping in Freeport is a major concern for the Grand Bahama Port Authority.

Deputy Director and City at the GBPA Manager Troy McIntosh revealing that it is one of the biggest expenses for his department. He also shares some of the items frequently dumped illegally.

And here’s an important fact, if residents leave old appliances at their doorstep or place them where bulk trash is usually collected, the city removes them at no cost.

So, why does illegal dumping persist? Is it a lack of education or public awareness?

“I think for the last 15 years, I’ve been talking about this that is free,” McIntosh said.

“And so perhaps we need another 15 years, maybe times two within that time, to speak about it more frequently. But for the last 15 years, the number that we pay for clean up has never been reduced. Never that number has always been going up.”
