NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A suspect has been charged with the death of a man who was shot dead outside his home on Douglas Road in  Gambier Village on Tuesday night.

Prosecutors say 20-year-old Takeyo Poitier fatally shot 29-year-old Shanton Johnson on September 6.

According to police, Johnson went outside around 2 am to investigate reports that someone was trying to break into his home.

While checking the property, Johnson was shot multiple times. He died at the scene.

Police arrested Poitier, who also lives on Douglas Road, later that day—and they allegedly seized a 9mm pistol with six rounds of ammunition.

Poitier appeared before Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Praty charged with murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

He was not required to enter pleas to the charges and was remanded to prison.

Poitier will return to court on January 28 when it is expected that he will receive a voluntary bill of indictment that will send the case to the Supreme Court for trial.
