CUBA – Hurricane Melissa pounded eastern Cuba early Wednesday, flooding streets and ripping roofs off homes.

In Santiago de Cuba, residents spent the morning wading through knee-deep water, clearing fallen trees and power lines after the category three storm made landfall.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Melissa struck with winds near 120 miles per hour.

Cuban officials say more than 750,000 were evacuated from vulnerable areas.
