HAITI – At least 1,520 people were killed and more than 600 others injured in Haiti during the second quarter of this year, most of them in Port-Au-Prince and largely at the hands of criminal gangs.

That’s according to a new report from the United Nations integrated office in Haiti, which described the country’s human rights situation as “extremely worrying”.

Between April and June, the UN says gangs also carried out at least 185 kidnappings and committed 628 cases of sexual violence, including sexual slavery, exploitation, and child trafficking.

The surge in violence has fueled Haiti’s humanitarian crisis, with more than 1.3 million people now displaced nationwide.
