NASSAU, BAHAMAS – For the first time in three decades, just over 200 taxi drivers will soon be issued their own taxi plates, doing away with the age-old practice of leasing.

Taxi drivers now breathing a sigh of relief as several cab drivers gathered at Loyola Hall to get taxi plates. The move comes after a 30-year moratorium was placed on taxi plates.

Cab drivers hailing it as a plus. Taxi Cab Union President Wesley Ferguson says the last time taxi plates were issued was back in 1992. Since then, anyone looking to get into the industry had to lease plates.
