NASSAU , BAHAMAS –

Khalil Parker – Legal Advisor, FNM

“It was important for us to come to the public and clearly state what was in the offing, which was not disclosed to us voluntarily. It was disclosed to us upon prodding in a meeting shortly before the election.”

Free National Movement Legal Advisor, Khalil Parker, at a press conference Thursday evening alleged that the Parliamentary Registration Department was seeking legal advice from the Attorney General on whether persons not on the register can vote on white ballots.

He claims the matter only came to light after party officials pressed for answers.

We also spoke with PLP Legal Advisor Keenan Johnson, who said the party has no issue with the PRD seeking legal guidance on the matter.

“It is certainly our position that if someone is not on the register and they have a valid voter’s card, that they should vote on a protest or a yellow ballot. The fact that they are seeking legal counsel on a legal query is not a concern for us. That’s something that we would want for them to do because we understand that would be within their right.”

Johnson also pushed back against claims that the PRD was acting in favor of the government.

“So, to be clear, we only raised the concern of persons who have shown to us that they have transferred or were duly registered and are not showing up on the register. What we sought was clarification on how that matter would be addressed. We’re not trying to encourage anyone to vote on a white ballot. We only want to make sure there’s no confusion on election day.”

We also reached out to Parliamentary Commissioner Harrison Thompson, who told Our News he was unable to comment at the time but said a statement would be released to address the matter.
