PALESTINE – For the first time in the Middle East, famine has officially been determined, and it’s in Gaza.

The integrated food security phase classification, a global initiative backed by the U.N. and aid groups, said Friday that famine conditions are already present in Gaza city and will likely spread south by the end of September.

The report warns more than half a million people are facing catastrophic hunger, with over a million others at emergency levels. By fall, nearly a third of Gaza’s population could be in famine.

Israel rejected the findings, calling them “an outright lie” and blaming Hamas for the crisis.

Aid groups say supplies are stuck at Gaza’s border and that food kits are expiring while children starve.
