NASSAU , BAHAMAS – A recent Miami Herald report ignited a wave of responses over the Davis administration’s decision to hire American consultants CJ Pearson and Roger Stone.

According to U.S. Foreign Agents Registration Act filings, Stone received a $100,000 contract, while Pearson’s firm is set to receive $20,000 monthly to represent Bahamian interests in Washington.

The Office of the Prime Minister has since defended the decision, saying the United States is The Bahamas’ “closest and most consequential partner,” with U.S. decisions impacting the country’s economy, security, tourism, and financial services.

I caught up with residents to get their thoughts on the issue, many of them saying the money could be put to better use.

Resident

“They spending $100,000 a month, and people out there dying because they don’t have dialysis machines and proper medical equipment in our, like I say, in our hospitals and stuff like that. Like that right there, they spending money on the wrong things to help our people.”

Resident

“You know, I would use the word asinine. There’s no need for that. That money could be better spent here on the ground with our Bahamian people. There’s a lot that this country needs. If you look at downtown itself, downtown is in total disarray.”

Some residents were even more blunt, expressing anger over what they described as government wastage.

Resident

“The overspending of the government is a bunch of $*!*. The $141 million, we don’t see nothing what they did with that money. The beaches and parks still look like garbage. For example, check out Sanders Beach. Check out Montagu. Check out Yamacraw. Check out all these beaches. What you all actually did with this money?”

Resident

“Agreement they have with this Stone gentleman is ridiculous. It’s stupid. The other influencer who’s being paid $20,000, that’s ridiculous. When is this wastage going to stop? And I feel like Bahamians should be upset with the amount of money that’s being spent.”

Not everyone was concerned.

Resident

“The government give them $100,000? Or that’s the government, I ain’t getting in that, let them deal with that.”

As public frustration grows over government spending, many Bahamians said they want more accountability and more investment in the issues impacting everyday people.
