JAPAN – The globally popular Japanese franchise Pokémon is celebrating 30 years.

The game debuted as “Pocket Monsters” on the Nintendo Game Boy in Japan on February 27th, 1996.

Pokémon has grown into the world’s most valuable media franchise according to Guinness World Records, with estimated revenues topping $100 billion.

The brand now includes a hit animated series, films, trading cards and video games.

Earlier this month, a rare Pokémon card paired with a diamond-encrusted necklace sold for more than $16M.
