Freeport Streets Renamed In Honor Of Local Legends

FREEPORT, GRAND BAHAMA – Three streets have been renamed to honor local legends in a grand celebration in Freeport on Tuesday, as the Grand Bahama Port Authority celebrates their 70th anniversary milestone.

A portion of Coral Road in Freeport now bears the name of legendary basketball coach Gladstone Moon Mcphee.

The renaming ceremony was filled with applause as GBPA executives, students and community supporters gathered to celebrate his contributions.

East Atlantic Drive was also renamed in honor of a longtime educator and former principal of Hawksbill High School, Cecil J. Thompson. Thompson expressed his gratitude for the recognition.

Beach Way Drive was renamed after the late educator and athlete, Anita Doherty, a nation builder who touched countless lives across the country. The street is near the Bishop Michael Eldon school where Doherty served as principal for many years.

GBPA President Ian Rolle highlights the significance of this initiative. Rolle says

“A part of the GBPA’s vision is to do some very impactful things that mean something to the people in Freeport, so we wanted to focus on on the real people that make a difference.”
