Exuma Oil Spill an “Extreme Situation”

EXUMA, BAHAMAS – The fuel spill in Georgetown, Exuma is an “extreme situation,” according to the Director of Environmental Planning and Protection (DEPP), however officials note it is “easier to contain” than most.

However, Dr. Rhianna Neely-Murphy says it occurred in a location that makes it easier than most to contain. Dr. Neely-Murphy says officers were on site from late this morning and will return in the morning to continue the rapid assessment.

Pumping of the area will continue throughout the evening, however assessments of the impact to the immediate and nearshore environments and the possible effect on wildlife will continue in the morning.

DEPP is also confirming initial estimates of the amount of diesel that may have been leaked and are in possession of the hose that was breached. At this point, DEPP notes a second boom has been installed to continue to contain the fuel.

Dr. Neely-Murphy also thanked Island Administrator Palacious, who she says assisted in coordinating the containment activities on island during the early morning hours.
