Strachan’s Season’s Best Highlights Busy Day for Bahamians

TOKYO – Back to the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, one veteran moved on to the semifinals, while others athletes showed signs of promise in their debut at this level.

In her fifth appearance at the World Champs, Anthonique Strachan continued her strong comeback season in the women’s 200 meters after an injury shortened 2024.

Strachan finished second in heat four in a season’s best 22.57 seconds to book an automatic spot in the semifinals.

The ninth fastest qualifier in the field, she will run out of lane six in the first of three semis tomorrow morning at 8:24 am local time.

Also in the 200m, Ian Kerr finished seventh in heat four in 20.92 seconds and did not advance.

In the field events, Keyshawn Strachan finished just outside a spot in the javelin final.

With a best throw of 80.03 meters, he finished 12th in group B, 22nd overall.

In the triple jump, Kaiwan Culmer fell short of the 17.10-meter standard needed to move on.

His best leap of 16.39 meters, placed 23rd overall.

Basketball

Baha Mar Hoops will once again turn it’s convention center into the home of two separate women’s tournaments – the Pink Flamingo Championship and the Nassau championship.

The action starts November 24th and 26th with the Pink Flamingo field, headlined by Ohio State, west Virginia, Minnesota, Alabama, Harvard, and McNeese State.

Then on November 28th and 30th, the Nassau Championship takes center stage with Michigan State, Clemson, Temple, Kent State, and Houston.

Event organizers say the tournament continues to showcase women’s basketball on a global stage while offering athletes a first-class experience at one of the world’s premier destinations.

In total, 20 NCAA Division one games will be played across an 11-day span this Thanksgiving holiday.

UB Athletics

The University of The Bahamas’ Mingoes men and women’s teams closed out international competition this past weekend at the Embry-Riddle Cross-Country Classic in Daytona Beach, Florida.

The men’s five-member team finished tenth overall, while the women did not compete in the team standings.

Top performers on the men’s side Lhevinne Joseph, clocked 31 minutes, 23 seconds in the men’s 8k – 55th out of 96 competitors while Kenold Jean was 60th.

On the women’s side, Najihan Mortimer was the top finisher, completing the 3K course in 26:33 to place 46th overall out of 63 runners.

The Mingoes now turn their attention to the UB Cross Country 2025 Invitational on September 27th at the Queen Elizabeth Sports Center.
