UNITED STATES – The NCAA Division I outdoor season got underway, and the throwers took center stage—highlighted by Taysha Stubbs etching her name into the Nebraska Cornhusker record books.
Competing at the Hurricane Invitational in Miami, Florida, Smith Debu delivered the fourth-best javelin mark in school history, throwing 56.34m.
Also competing in Miami for the home team, University of Miami junior Calea Jackson placed third in the discus with a throw of 50.25m.
At Northwestern State’s Leon Johnson Invitational, several members of the NSU roster reached the medal podium.
Highlighting the meet was Tarajh Hudson, who launched a season-best discus throw of 55.19m, moving him into the NCAA East Region top 10 and to the top of his conference.
Abner Johnson finished second in the hammer throw at 51m.
On the track for NSU, Clinton Laguerre captured the men’s 400-meter hurdles title in 55.47 seconds.
NCAA Track and Field
Sprinters were also active and successful early on in their outdoor seasons.
Georgia Southern’s Shatalya Dorsett got her season started by being named the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week.
At UCF’s Black and Gold Challenge, she clocked 53.95 seconds in a loaded 400m field to finish second.
Her time now tops the conference and ranks number three all-time in the Georgia Southern program.
Also in the Sun Belt, Paige Archer had a huge weekend for Texas State at their Charles Austin Classic.
She took the sprint double, winning the 100m in 11.73 seconds and the 200m in 23.74 seconds.
Louisiana Tech’s Oscar Smith won his first event of the outdoor season at the Clyde Hart Classic with his time of 13.56 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles.
A week earlier, Smith made his season debut with a third-place finish in 13.71 seconds.
NBA G-League
Franco Miller Jr. saved his best game of the season for his last game of the season.
Miller closed his rookie NBA G League campaign with the Santa Cruz Warriors in style when he erupted for 35 points, but Santa Cruz fell 134–116 to the Texas Legends at Kaiser Permanente Arena.
Miller shot 7–14 from three, adding five assists and two steals in his most complete performance of the year.
On the season, he averaged 9.1 points, 3.4 assists, and 3.0 rebounds in 21.5 minutes per game.
His rookie campaign included several standout performances:
A 25-point, 6-assist night against Oklahoma City; 21 points and 8 rebounds versus Salt Lake City; 16 points, 9 assists, and 5 rebounds against Iowa; and 16 points, 5 assists, and 7 rebounds against Sioux Falls.
