Eruption of Guatemala’s Fuego Volcano Prompts Community Evacuations

GUATEMALA – Residents of two villages near Guatemala’s Fuego Volcano have evacuated their homes following an eruption.

Video of the eruption shows clouds of gas and ash rising above the volcano as lava and pyroclastic flows move down the mountain.

The eruption began Monday morning and continued throughout the day, prompting evacuation orders for villages on the southern side of the volcano.

Fuego Volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in Guatemala. Another eruption in June last year led to preventive evacuations, while a previous eruption in June 2018 killed hundreds of people and destroyed an entire village.
