Bahamas Union of Teachers President Says a New Leader Has to Rise as She Announces Her Exit

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – After nearly two decades at the helm of the Bahamas Union of Teachers, Belinda Wilson has announced when she plans to step away.

“ When I sign next week, it will be the last industrial agreement that I will sign as the President of the Bahamas Union of Teachers, because I will be retiring on July 5th, 2028, God’s willing.”

Wilson announced her exit while serving as guest speaker at the Rotary Club of West Nassau’s weekly meeting.

She has served as President of the Bahamas Union of Teachers since 2008, and was re-elected in 2025 for what she had already described as her final term.

Her announcement also comes as the Union prepares to put pen to paper on a new five-year industrial agreement with the government.

The deal covering 2025 to 2030, follows months of negotiations between the two sides.

Wilson also reflects on her time within the Union.

“ Ida Poitier was the president, I was the secretary general. We signed the first ever industrial agreement for the Bahamas Union of Teachers. We signed that November 17th, 2006. 20 years later, next week, we will sign the fifth agreement.”

With her departure now on the horizon, the attention will eventually turn to who takes over the Union’s top post.

As for what she’ll do until retirement, Wilson says there is still work to be done.

“ In the next year, [we’ll] ensure that persons who are waiting for confirmations and promotions, reclassifications, back pay; that those persons receive those letters and those funds that they need.”
