Stefan “Legend” Davis Remembered

NASSAU , BAHAMAS – At 11 o’clock Saturday morning, a black-and-gold casket carrying the body of prominent local artist Stefan Davis was wheeled into Bahamas Faith Ministries, where family, friends and mourners gathered to say their final goodbyes.

But the funeral was not just about mourning his death. It was also a celebration of the colourful life and creativity of the man many knew as “Stefan Legend.”

Davis died tragically in a car crash in Florida on September 2, just days before his 56th birthday. Authorities say the crash happened after a driver fleeing a traffic stop ran a red light.

Inside the church, Davis’ coffin was surrounded by his artwork and large Junkanoo costumes, a reflection of the creativity that defined his life.

His family and close friends wore black, accented with playful and colourful embellishments, a further sign that while they came to grieve his loss, they also came to celebrate the life he lived.

“Now I know a lot of people in this room know him as Airbrush Junkies, but Graffiti Addicts is where he started.”

Obiama Knowles’ tribute was just one of many shared with the room full of mourners.

Again and again, those who spoke remembered Davis for his humility, his creativity and the impact of his art.

His daughter, Teja Davis, also spoke of her father’s influence, an influence that extended well beyond The Bahamas.

“On our trip to Jamaica, in the middle of Kingston, I vividly remember someone calling out, ‘Hey, Airbrush Junkies,’ and let me just say, they had him smiling that whole trip.”

Friend Khari Albury shared that while Davis may be remembered by many as a cultural icon, to those closest to him, he was so much more.

He was a son, a father, a brother and a friend.

“Stef surprised us with pieces of artwork featuring Jesus. He wrote that we have been through it all and conquered it all. He thanked me for teaching him what friendship really meant. On the back of my painting, he wrote something I will treasure for the rest of my life. It read, ‘Some people are blessed with a soul-deep friendship. Thank you for being my soul friend.’”
