NASSAU, THE BAHAMAS – For more than seven decades, he was next in line to the British throne, waiting to follow in the footsteps of his mother, Queen Elizabeth the second.

Following his mother’s death in 2022, Prince Charles became King Charles the third, marking the beginning of a new chapter in British history.

From his early years as heir to the throne to his historic coronation, our Jasmin Brown takes a look at his life, legacy and ascension.

Seventy years in the making, one moment that changed history.

On September 8th, 2022, the death of Queen Elizabeth the second brought an end to the longest reign in British history and made her eldest son king.

After a lifetime spent preparing for the crown, Charles faced his greatest transition yet, following in the footsteps of a mother who had defined an era.

For Charles, her death marked both a personal loss and a historic transition, as he assumed the responsibilities of the British monarchy.

From childhood, his future was already written into the history of the monarchy.

Born November 14th, 1948, Charles, who is the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth the second and Prince Philip, was just three years old when his mother ascended the throne in 1952.

Over the following decades, he represented the Royal Family at home and abroad, supporting charitable initiatives and championing environmental conservation, sustainable agriculture and community development.

His accession was formally proclaimed at St. James’s Palace on September 10th, 2022.

In his first address as king, Charles honoured his mother’s lifetime of service and pledged to continue her commitment to the crown.

On May 6th, 2023, Charles and his wife Camilla, were crowned at Westminster Abbey in London.

It was Britain’s first coronation in nearly 70 years, combining centuries-old royal traditions with a ceremony reflecting a changing nation.

Today, Charles serves as head of state of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth Nations.

Marking another milestone in a journey that started with a three-year-old heir, who became a monarch to a crowned king.
