GRAND BAHAMA – The retreat earlier this month is now under close watch by health officials, but some community leaders are urging calm.

Pastor Eddie Victor of Living Waters Assemblies of God says he is not aware of anyone locally testing positive and believes residents should focus on good health practices and keeping their faith in God, rather than fear.

“Don’t be concerned if you’re practicing good, healthy hygiene and healthy eating habits and taking things preventively to help you build up your immune system. You need to trust God and also trust the body that He created you with. You just need to make some dietary changes that will cause this immune system in your body to kick into high gear.”

Dr. Kevin Bethel of the Family Wellness Center says that while patients are showing COVID-like symptoms, current test kits may miss newer variants, leaving some cases undetected.

“We still have test kits, but the issue is that maybe the test kits are testing for an older Omicron-type variant rather than whatever this new variant is. So it is possible that people may have it. And the other issue is that most people have had COVID, whether they knew it or not, so they have some level of immunity from previous infections, which would mean that hopefully whatever happens to them now is going to be mild.”

He adds that most Bahamians already know the basics, urging simple steps such as supporting the immune system with vitamins and paying attention to early symptoms. He says people should seek medical attention if those measures do not help.

“Most people have had experience with COVID already. They kind of know what to do. The same things to help keep your immune system strong. Vitamin D, vitamin C, maybe even zinc, if you start to come down with symptoms.”
