UNITED STATES – Republican Kevin McCarthy has now lost six rounds of voting for the job of Speaker of the US House of Representatives, with another vote to follow shortly.

The house reconvened after it failed to elect a speaker on Tuesday – an extraordinary development not seen for a century.

Voting will continue on Wednesday until a candidate gets 218 votes.

McCarthy, the leading contender to replace democrat Nancy Pelosi in the job, has failed to convince 20 more conservative republicans to back him.
