‘We Had a Right to Assemble’, says Coalition Deputy Leader

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – One day after Coalition of Independents Leader Lincoln Bain and some of his supporters were arrested Wednesday, the party’s deputy leader is demanding their immediate release.

Coalition of Independents Leader, Lincoln Bain and several of his supporters remain in police custody, Thursday, after being charged with unlawful assembly.

This following an attempted protest Wednesday, at the heavily guarded Baha Mar resort which is hosting the 44th annual CARICOM Heads of Government meetings this week.

With document in hand, COI Deputy Leader Maria Daxon says they will file a constitutional motion.

Daxon says she, Bain and two others were guests at the hotel, which she says gave them a right to be there.

Daxon adding that the Bahamian Constitution gives them a right to have a peaceful assembly and she is calling for the resignation of the officers who allegedly assaulted their supporters.

Their fight does not end there, she says the next step is taking their concerns to the United Nations.
