NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A recent Privy Council ruling will put The Bahamas in a stronger position to quickly deport individuals from The Bahamas, according to Immigration Minister Keith Bell.

Last week, the Privy Council heard a case between the attorney general and Douglas Ngumi.

The issue – if the government was lawful in detaining Ngumi on the basis that they were arranging his deportation and if so, was three months a reasonable period.

The Court of Appeal found that in some respects the trial judge had erred in the assessment of damages, and increased Ngumi’s award to to $750,950, plus additional interest.

Bell says immigration officials have already started looking to see where existing laws can be strengthened updated.
