GRAAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – Several iconic structures in the international bazaar in Freeport are being demolished. 

The effort by the Grand Bahama Port Authority is to address the issue of dilapidated buildings throughout the city.

The GBPA has said the issue with demolishing buildings in the bazaar is there are multiple owners but the assistant city manager is explaining how they got consent for this latest demolition.

The Asisan and African structures that were damaged by fire were torn down by a bulldozer early Wednesday morning. Our News capturing aerial footage of the demolition at the bazaar that’s been a part of the City of Freeport for over 40 years.

According to the Vice President of Building and Development Services Nikira Wilchcombe, they have made contact with all 15 owners in the bazaar. 

She says it’s important for owners to know that the property remains in their hands, once demolished and she says they will continue to make contact with the various owners of structures to ensure that the GBPA is able to give the city a fresh appealing look.

Now over the years, residents have expressed deep concern about the International Bazaar and has called for it to be demolished. 

Some even stating the bazaar is the reason why the economy of freeport is in an economic slump.
