The Role of Former Prime Ministers

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – I am more than happy to see that Prime Minister, Philip “Brave” Davis has included former prime ministers, Hubert Ingraham and Perry Christie in some official duties. Beyond that, I see the courtesy of invites extended to the gentlemen for state events. Believe it or not, this is normal in other countries. 

God has given both Hubert Ingraham and Perry Christie good health and sound minds at their three scores and ten plus ages. This, coupled with the fact that both men were good and astute politicians, proves they have much left in them to offer. 

Hubert Ingraham is very quiet these days in terms of public interviews. I’m not sure if this is a good thing or this is a bad thing, but what I do know is that it has nothing to do with mischief as some politicos are suggesting. A mastermind at politics, Ingraham has overcome so many political hardships. He can attest to the old adage, “Going through the fire to come out as pure gold.” Christie the same. 

Even though the both gentlemen had separated and taken different political paths, they both ended up with the country’s top job – Prime Minister. The fact that they are both alive, willing and able means they should be utilized.

This brings me to my next point. There was a time, and not so long ago, when Ingraham and Christie were treated to a dog life. The saddest picture that comes to mind is an interview with both Ingraham and Christie in Abaco after Hurricane Dorian – huddled together in a golf cart with no government official around or communicating with them.  

Expressing sincere empathy for those impacted by that devastating storm, both gentlemen made their way to Abaco to assess damages and communicate with many residents of that island. During the interview, Ingraham and Christie made it clear that they had not been contacted by then Prime Minister, Dr. Hubert Minnis for advice or anything to do with that horrible storm. 

If one was to remember those times, Dr. Minnis was not a seasoned politician, he had little to no experience at running a major country, and then came this monster storm that tore up the place. One would think he would go to the doors of those former statesmen, knock and ask for their advice and assistance on reassuring the residents of Abaco and Grand Bahama that officials will take care of them, and then plan the next steps. 

Instead the tight grip on power was displayed and an attitude that landed him in trouble with the masses. At the end of the day the masses spoke and the MP of the area suffered for it. I don’t wish to dig into that now closing wound. The people of Abaco are now in a better place. 

I am more than overjoyed to see the new culture with the current prime minister. It comes full circle in regards to life’s matters. Our ancestors would put aside their village differences and would always give us wise council. 

Clearly this prime minister gets that. 

Kudos to the “Brave” one for being brave and putting on his bi-partisan hat and getting the advice and representation he might need. Well that’s how I see it, anyway.
