CiWIL: Time for Action

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Recent acts of violence against women and children prompting members of civil society to renew calls for action to combat gender-based violence.

The chair of The Bahamas chapter of Caribbean Women in Leadership Charlene Paul says her members are ready to get to work and lend support wherever possible to end the scourge of violence in the country.

In 2015, the National Task Force for Gender-Based Violence penned a strategic plan to address the issue. That committee, headed by retired Justice Rubie Nottage, laid out a plan for immediate implementation and “The ten, low-hanging fruits” -among those short-term solutions include the creation of a unified family court, focus on male mentoring, and an early intervention program for children exposed to violence.
