NASSAU, BAHAMAS – You can find dozens of tents, stocked with back-to-school essentials, from book bags, pencils and notepads to uniforms, belts, socks and underwear at the R.M. Bailey Park. But customers have been few and far between, with vendors hoping things will pick up in the coming days.

President of R.M. Bailey Vendors association Karen brown says this isn’t normal.

The Department of Inland Revenue announced last week that this year’s Back-to-school VAT holiday would run from August 18th to September 14th.

Vendors on the park do not charge VAT on their items but even that hasn’t been a big draw for customers.

I ran into this mother and her daughter, who says although she prefers shopping at the mall, she finds better bargains at the park.

I also spoke to two sisters who are  back-to-school vendors at the park. They now run their mother’s stall following her death.
