THE BAHAMAS – On August 26, 2000, former Prime Minister of The Bahamas Sir Lynden Pindling passed away at the age of 70 in New Providence. Pindling is regarded by many as the “Father of the Nation,” having led The Bahamas to majority rule and independence. He served as the first Black Premier from 1967 to 1969 and as Prime Minister of The Bahamas from 1969 to 1992. He was the leader of the Progressive Liberal Party from 1956 until 1997, when he resigned from public life. Three years later, Pindling died after a prolonged battle with prostate cancer. A state funeral was held at the Church of God of Prophecy on East Street on September 4, 2000, and he was laid to rest in Saint Agnes Cemetery.

In 2021, the nation said farewell to former Governor General and Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Dion Hanna, who played a major role in both the majority rule and independence movements. Hanna, who declined a knighthood, was buried on the 21st anniversary of the death of Sir Lynden Pindling, the man he fought with and served alongside for over 40 years. Former Prime Ministers Perry Christie and Hubert Ingraham joined members of the Cabinet, Chief Justice, Governor General C.A. Smith, and other mourners during the service. In his tribute, then Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis described Hanna as a man who loved his Bahamas.
