GUYANA – Caribbean statesman Sir Shridath Sonny Ramphal has died, family members confirming his death on Friday.

In a statement issued by his son-in-law Sir Ronald Sanders, the family announced that he passed away peacefully and was surrounded by his children.

Sir Shridath was born on October 3, 1928, in New Amsterdam, British Guiana, which is now Guyana.

Educated at King’s College London and Gray’s Inn, London, he was a towering figure in international diplomacy and a cherished elder statesman of the Commonwealth and the Caribbean.

Sir Shridath’ s distinguished career included serving as Assistant Attorney-General of the West Indies Federation, Minister of Justice and Foreign Affairs of Guyana, and Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.
