Berthamae Gardiner – Resident
“That’s the best thing he could have ever done.”

Piggye – Resident
“A lot of corruption was going on. A lot of scandal going down. And he was the man in the chair. So I think he did the right choice.”

That’s how some Bahamians are reacting to the news of the resignation of outgoing commissioner, Clayton Fernander.

The resignation comes after a damning U.S. indictment named Chief Superintendent of Police Elvis Curtis, who was officer-in-charge of the airport division, Sergeant Prince Symonette, who worked with Curtis, and RBDF Chief Petty Officer Darrin Roker, as conspirators helping to facilitate the transshipment of tons of cocaine from South America through the Bahamas and ultimately the U.S.

Piggye – Resident
“Even though, even though the police, they are supposed to be accountable for their actions, he’s still the leader.”

Piggye – Resident
“We have a lot of good and we have a lot of bad policemen. So the good is painful with the bad do.”

But Fernander isn’t the only one these residents think should pack their bags.

Berthamae Gardiner – Resident
“Corruption need to be weeded out in this country.”

Piggye – Resident
“That’s an example right there. So all of them should do the same thing. Who, who, who are corrupt.”

Fernander’s resignation makes way for the first female commissioner of police in Bahamian history. Residents had mixed views about that.

Ryan McIntosh – Resident
“When it comes to a woman leader for it, they can happen. But when it comes by the Bible, say a man should run the nation.”

Piggye – Resident
“A female in opposition, first time, you know, it’s a good thing, but they did that to save face because there’s people who have been there way longer than her, more qualified than her that they could have given it to, but I think they did it to save face.”

Piggye – Resident
“As women, we have head men, they work with two different things. But women, we have had, we know what, we know the right thing. We ain’t going to compromise nothing.”
