NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Attorney General Ryan Pinder says no bill on citizenship will be advanced until the Privy Council rules on whether the constitution provides an automatic right to citizenship at birth to children born out of wedlock to Bahamian fathers and foreign mothers.

The question was put to Prime Minister Philip Davis who said if the government loses, then the law will be followed.

Before a landmark ruling by Supreme Court Justice Ian Winder in 2020, the interpretation had been those children had no automatic right.

The Privy c]Council heard arguments on January 17th.
