NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Headaches, cavities, hearing loss and even anemia are among the silent health problems that can affect Bahamian children as they head back to the classroom.

Doctors say a simple back-to-school health checkup can help detect these issues early and prevent them from becoming bigger problems during the school year.

Leading that message is Dr. Neteisha Rahming, CEO of Rahming’s Medical Centre.

She’s also well-known for her viral TikTok videos, where she educates, entertains and promotes her medical specials throughout the year, a passion she says she has carried for years.

Now, as families prepare for another school year, Dr. Rahming is stressing the importance of making health checks part of every child’s back-to-school routine.

“During back to school physicals, we tend to check vision, hearing, their urine. We check their iron, and other tests as well.”

“The issue is that you would not know that the child needs glasses or may even have a hearing problem, because these things are easily missed. And that’s why these back to school physicals are so important.”

From nutrition gaps to dental health, Dr. Rahming says these exams can uncover everyday health issues that parents may not always notice.

“I’ve found so many children with low iron, poor nutritional status. A lot of children, they’re eating junk food and noodles, right. On all of my forms, most of my forms, I have to say, listen, you have to eat leafy green vegetables. You have to get a multivitamin with iron in it.”

Then sometimes, the warning signs aren’t obvious, as some health problems can go unnoticed until a simple test brings them to light.

For Dr. Rahming, it’s about more than just exams, because for years, she’s worked to make healthcare more accessible and affordable for Bahamian families, and now that she’s in her brand-new facility, she’s taking that commitment a step further this back-to-school season.

Dr. Rahming plans to give $500 to one parent, while also providing ten of her young patients with free dental cleanings.

It’s her way of giving back and showing that caring for the community goes beyond the exam room.

“I love giving back to my Bahamian people. I love giving back to my community, all right. It’s all a part of who I am.”
