IOWA – The Satanic Temple is accusing Iowa state officials of religious discrimination, claiming they were unfairly denied access to the state Capitol for a holiday display planned for 2024.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Iowa recently filed a formal complaint on behalf of the group, alleging that state leaders blocked the event despite previously allowing similar Christian displays inside the Capitol building.

State officials defended their decision by citing concerns about costumes and child safety. However, the Temple dismissed those justifications as an “absurd excuse,” arguing that the real issue is unequal treatment based on religious beliefs.

The controversy follows backlash from the previous year, when the group’s approved holiday display, featuring a statue of Baphomet, was vandalized by a man who destroyed the setup. That display had been placed next to a Christmas tree in the Capitol rotunda, drawing both public attention and criticism.

The case is now at the center of a growing debate about religious freedom, equal access to public spaces, and how the government navigates expressions of belief during the holiday season.
