UNITED STATES – Slightly more Americans applied for jobless benefits last week, but overall layoffs remained in a healthy range.

The U.S. Labor Department reported 219,000 new applications for the week ending February 15th, up 5,000 from the previous week and slightly above analysts’ forecast of 215,000.

Meanwhile, the four-week average fell by 1,000 to 215,250.

In addition, total recipients of unemployment benefits rose by 24,000, reaching 1.87 million for the week of February 8th.
