Exuma Residents React To WSC Upgrades

EXUMA, BAHAMAS – The Water and Sewerage Corporation has invested $9.1 million into providing hundreds of residents with running water for the first time.

EXUMA, BAHAMAS – The Water and Sewerage Corporation Completing Extensive Work on Exuma

The $9.1 million project will provide hundreds of residents with potable water for the first time, replace about three miles of new water mains, and provide a pressure booster facility to improve water pressure for Rolle Town and Little Exuma residents.

WSC General Manager Robert Deal says the work is in line with climate resilience standards.

“We focus on climate resiliency, ensuring that these mains and systems are resilient to storms and hurricanes, so that’s critical for us. Ensuring that these mains are buried to the proper depth where we interact with bridges—you will see in a short while that we have some bridge crossings that are properly secured in the event of climate events. Sustainability is critical for us.”

Officials say the new systems will also limit water waste with the implementation of smart meters.

WSC Executive Chairman Trajean Jadorette says the smart meters ensure better measurement of water from operation to tap.

“We are very, very excited about that as well. That will save the customer quite a bit. The kind of leakage that we sometimes catch three months later, we will have the ability to catch far in advance, and it will save the customers quite a bit of money.”

But what do residents think?

Barraterre resident Donnie Storr is one of those getting potable water for the first time.

The trained plumber says the water pressure is much better.

“Immediately after, I got my shovel and began digging the trench to run the water from the meter to my house, and ever since, I’ve been using nice, fresh potable water.”

But he’s not the only resident celebrating the new works throughout the island.

“It is a joy to see the corporation live up to their demands because of the fast, rapid growth of homes. The island is really moving along with the outer settlements, 11 and 14, which were eating up plenty of the water before it got to us. Now, this booster station is a miracle for us.”
