NASSAU, BAHAMAS – As firefighters around the country have had their hands full with serval blazes in recent weeks, a fire specialist is providing tips on what you should have in your home or business to tackle fires.

It all starts with having a good strategy, fires have grabbed headlines in recent weeks.

Many of them, burning close to homes and businesses, threatening lives and property.

So what can you do to protect yourself?

Our News spoke to Gary Goodman, a fire specialist, who says items like smoke detectors are vital.

“This is very easy to connect it. This can save many lives. You just put this in your kitchen at your establishment, restaurant and you just put this up and this alarms you in case any smoke gas or any type of thing.”

Goodman says fire extinguishers should also be accessible.

“Here is a 5 pounder that you should have in your house at all times. You can see this fire extinguisher handles grease fire, electrical fire, and trash fire. This is an ABC dry chemical fire extinguisher. It’s mixed with a 195 PSI pressure with dry chemical and when it unites it goes off and takes care of whatever business or situation you face.”

Businesses have also been threatened by blazes.

Just last month, blazes tore through a complex that houses Solomon’s Old Trail, Cost Right, and government offices, destroying the building.

Goodman says businesses should also have proper plans.

“See all of this here you have sprinkler system, exit , you’d know what exit to run to if you in a a large building you can see it all through the hotels you see exits you wonder why they have them exit signs, it’s for evacuation to let you know exactly where to evacuate incase of a catastrophe.”

“There are 5000 people are killed every year not only in The Bahamas but in the world from fire and you have about 80,000 that are injured.”
